·
The Commercial Management team of a store is responsible for
delivering the best quality service to customers. It influences what products lines the store will stock and in
what quantities. YOU
will decide when, where and how they
are displayed. You generate the ideas
for special promotions to launch new products or re-launch established
ones. In short, you must understand why, where and when a product sells well, and have the initiative to devise ways of
selling it even faster – and you must manage,
motivate and inspire others to put your ideas into action.
·
Commercial Management is very fast moving and it is essential for
a good manager to have their ear to the ground in search of new ways to do
things and also a good manager will have an eye on the sales floor, you must turn good ideas into successful
ideas.
PROFILE
The career prospects for commercial management are excellent, Iain Perkins joined Marks and Spencer in 1982 with a Psychology degree from Leeds University. Since then, he has worked both here in the U.K and also over in the United States for the Marks and Spencer owned Brookes Brothers men’s clothing chain.
Currently, he is the General Manager of the Camberley region, which encompasses nearly 1,000 staff and an
annual turnover of nearly £200 million ( more than the whole of many companies!
).
This quick career progression and
movement around the group is not uncommon and you must be prepared for early
responsibility, however the rewards are
great. Anthony Hemmerdinger manager of
the Shrewsbury store says,
“It has been tough and
the hours can be long, but at the same
time, there seems to be a challenge
every day. And it’s great to see people
develop and go on to become the leaders of tomorrow”.
